Senior Seminars - Survey and Programs to Enhance Students in Job Search.

Dudley Smith, Texas A&M University, Dept. of Soil & Crop Sciences, College Station, TX 77843-2474

Many agronmy departments and colleges of agriculture offer senior level courses in job search skills. A survey was conducted to assess seminar courses being offered in agronomy departments across the U.S. In the senior seminar course at Texas A&M University, students met in a conference room rather than a conventional classroom environment and were regarded as employees of the "BETA Corporation" (Biological, Environmental, Turf, and Agriculture Corp.)and assumed active roles in the learning process. Instructional materials and outlines were provided for “employees” to present information on contemporary topics, including resume and cover letter preparation, oral communications, researching jobs and corporate backgrounds, and interview preparation. Individual oral presentations addressed a technical topic of their choice, with evaluations by peers and “clients” (graduate students). Mock interviews were provided by corporate and agency representatives who used common behavioral techniques. Outside speakers presented topics such as “marketing yourself in today's environment”, “once upon a job” (on employer expectations), personal financial management (on dumping debt and investing now),and “giving back” (community and family relations). Three “think papers” guided students through self/career interests, researching firms, and interview questions. Grades were presented as “corporate pay” and evaluation rubrics were displayed on a web page so students could see how they would be evaluated and to help assure consistency in evaluations. Course details and student responses in entry and exit surveys will be summarized in the presentation.
