Foliar fertilization of soybean has been widely studied, and most studies have found that yield responses to this practice are small and infrequent and often not worth the cost of application. The development of Roundup Ready soybeans, however, offers the opportunity to apply foliar fertilizers with no cost of application other than the cost of the fertilizer if this fertilizer is mixed and applied with the Roundup. This opportunity has raised questions by many soybean growers in Delaware about the relative merits of adding foliar fertilizers to their Roundup when spraying Roundup Ready soybeans. To address this question, we initiated studies at several locations in Delaware. Our objective was to determine the frequency and magnitude of soybean yield responses to the application of foliar fertilizers. In these studies, we evaluated four different fertilizer products that were applied with the foliar application of Roundup at growth stage V3. In addition, we evaluated two nitrogen fertilizers that were applied at growth stage R3. Our results indicated that there was no yield increase from adding these foliar fertilizers to Roundup, and there was no yield increase from the application of nitrogen fertilizers during early reproductive growth.
