An Application of the SAS® Output Delivery System for Presenting Soil Test Summary Maps and Charts as HTML Web Pages.

John Balasko, West Virginia University, Division of Plant and Soil Sciences, P.O. Box 6108, Morgantown, WV 26506

The hundreds of soil test databases maintained across the US can prove to be a valuable resource for educational purposes, for developing research hypotheses, for marketing and production purposes, and for providing information to decision and policy makers. The presentation of such data in a meaningful and readily comprehendible format is a challenge. Data collected at the West Virginia University Soil Testing Laboratory between 1986 and 2004 were used to develop an approach to overcoming this challenge. The SAS Output Delivery System (ODS) allowed for the creation of 7,400+ linked interactive HTML web pages that illustrate summary statistics for seven variables (number of samples, pH, lime requirement, P, K, Ca, and Mg) for each of 19 crop codes as color-coded state maps and bar charts. County bar charts show state and county trends over a 19-year period. Features of this (ODS) application will be illustrated and discussed.
