Northern Florida has an excellent environment for growing and breeding annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) with wide adaptation to southeast U.S.A. and other countries. The first author was given a challenge by Oregon ryegrass seed companies in 1989 to provide them with adapted proprietary cultivars. He returned to Florida and began to seed 6,000 to 12,000 spaced plant nurseries using evolutionary recurrent selection techniques. Each new cultivar received three or more cycles of selection in FL and was then grown in OR by a seed company for a prebreeder and breeder seed cyucle. All nurseries and OR first plantings were rogued to remove diseased plants and 300 to 500 elite plants selected in a grid over nursery. The next cycle was planted with the composited seed of selected plants. In recent years, nurseries were planted with cobreeders in NC, NE and OK to get more cold tolerance in the ryegrass. Breeding techniques and a listing of 22 named ryegrass cultivars, their characteristics, and the seed company producing seed will be presented. Program continues at a lower level now.
