This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of the knowledge of waterborne viral pathogen fate and dissemination in the environment. The types and characteristics of waterborne viruses, their transport and fate in the environment, currently applied detection technologies, and the effectiveness of current water and wastewater treatment practices to reduce waterborne viruses will be covered. Current research on reclamation water treatment technologies to reduce enteric viruses will be discussed. In addition, emerging viruses of concern will also be mentioned. Information gaps needed for assessing the risk of viral pathogen exposure in different environments will also be provided.
