Priorities for Agricultural Development in Africa and the Potential Role of US Universities.

Jeff Hill, USAID, Africa Bureau, Ronald Reagan Building, Washington, DC 20523-1000

USAID is committed to effecting the changes in developing countries that will reduce the frustrations of their people and decrease the risks of conflict and instability.  Hunger and unemployment are clearly recognized as a threat to US security.  USAID is implementing the President’s Initiative to End Hunger in Africa (IEHA).  The paper describes USAID’s assessment of the needs for Agricultural Science and Technology in Africa; how this is related to and implemented in the IEHA; and the roles and opportunities that USAID sees for US agricultural scientists, their associations and institutions in the process.
