Rising energy costs and concerns over energy security and global climate change emphasize the urgent need to conserve energy. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recognizes that many agricultural activities designed to reduce soil erosion and improve water quality may also save energy. A series of simple, web-based energy awareness tools encourage producers to explore energy reduction strategies on their farm or ranch. The producer first enters a zip code, which activates relevant geographic information. Each tool is easy to use and leads the user to additional information, as appropriate. Since December 2005 four tools have been released. Additional tools are planned in 2007. The tillage tool estimates diesel fuel use for typical tillage systems and common crops in the United States and can help producers realize how switching to a less intensive tillage system can save fuel. The nitrogen tool estimates fertilizer and cost savings associated with nitrogen form, placement method and application timing. The irrigation tool demonstrates how water and energy can be saved with proper scheduling, monitoring, maintenance and irrigation system upgrades. The animal housing tool evaluates potential energy savings in confined animal housing systems. Producers can compare heating, lighting and ventilation systems for swine and poultry housing; and lighting, ventilation and milk pumping and cooling systems in dairies. The tools have received over 90,000 visitors to date. These awareness tools are an effective way to educate producers about energy use and energy savings in their operations.
