Development of N-P-K Fertilization Recommendations for Switchgrass and Big Bluestem as Native Biofuels.

Richard Z. Brown, Department of Agronomy and Soils, Auburn University, 201 Funchess Hall, Auburn University, AL 36849

Native warm-season grasses switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and big bluestem (Andropogen gerardii Vitman) are under consideration as potential renewable biofuels.  Fertilizer recommendations are essential for any crop to ensure optimal yield.  This study is being conducted to determine N-P-K fertilizer recommendations to produce optimal yield for switchgrass and big bluestem.  Stands of switchgrass and big bluestem were established in 2007 and 2008 to test effects of 16 different rates of N-P-K at two sites on Coastal Plains soils in Alabama.  After establishment, tissue samples were taken once a month throughout the growing season and analyzed for N-P-K. Yield and tissue nutrient content will be discussed.
