Shoot Biomass and Morphological Traits of Mexican Wheat Landraces.

Landraces of wheat grown in semiarid areas may be more tolerant to drought and heat. A total of 68 Oaxacan, Mexico, landraces (22 durums and 3 durum checks, and 46 bread wheats, and 4 bread wheat checks) were evaluated for shoot biomass and morhpological traits in well watered (wet) and droughted (dry) field conditions at Moreno Valley, CA, and compared to a local bread wheat check Yecora Rojo (YR). Several durum and bread wheat lines had similar or greater shoot biomass than YR in wet and dry conditions. Plant height ranged from 85-114 cm for durum lines and from 71-107 cm for bread wheat lines. Significant variation was found for phenological traits and seedling growth types (prostrate, semiprostrate, or upright) among landraces. Six bread wheat landraces had bluish glaucous leaf surfaces. Further studies on grain yield potential, physiological traits and root characteristics are recommended.
