Development of QTL-NILs for Eating Quality in Japonica Rice.

The eating quality of rice is one of the most important characteristics in many rice producing areas of the world. Since many components are involved in determining eating quality, it is difficult for breeders to improve rice eating quality by conventional methods. The objective of this study was to develop QTL-NILs for glossiness of cooked rice (GCR) related to eating quality. The GCR was determined using Toyo Mito Meter (Toyo, Japan). There was highly significant correlation (r=0.81**) between the GCR and the score of sensory test for eating quality of cooked rice in japonica cultivars. The population used in this study consisted of 231 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) developed from the cross between two japonica rice, Suweon365, a poor eating quality and Chucheongbyeo, an excellent eating quality through a single seed descent method. The linkage map of a total 1,998cM with an average interval distance of 8.5cM was constructed using 236 DNA markers of SSR, STS, AFLP and MITE. The significant putative QTLs were repeatedly identified for 2 years at four loci on chromosomes 7S, 7L, 8 and 11. These QTLs explained 5.4%, 8.8%, 8.9% and 7.2% of observed phenotypic variance. To produce a series of QTL-NILs for GCR, the RILs harboring desirable QTL alleles of Chucheongbyeo were successively backcrossed with Suweon365 and those backcrossed progenies were selected by marker assisted selection (MAS) until the BC4F1 generation. In GCR analysis of the BC4F1 population with the Suweon365 genetic background, the lines having the Chucheongbyeo segment of QTLs for GCR showed the allelic effect ranged from 1.0 to 2.7. These results would be useful in MAS breeding for the improvement of rice eating quality and pyramiding of desirable QTLs.
