Painting of dormant bermudagrass putting greens has recently become the number one alternative to overseeding greens for winter color. Currently, there is very little information available on the short and long term effects of paints on putting green grasses. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of two brands of turf paints applied at two rates (1 and 2 applications per season) versus a control (no paint or overseed). A factorial, 3 X 2 randomized complete block design is being implemented for this study. The 2-year study is being performed from November 2004 through July 2006 in the field on a ‘Champion' bermudagrass (C. dactylon (L.) Pers. X C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) putting green established in July of 2003. There are 3 replications totaling 18 plots. Parameters being measured include paint color quality, ball roll, soil temperature, spring green up, and summer turf quality. The first year's data indicate significantly better paint color quality with both brands of paint under 2 applications per season versus 1 application per season. Ball roll, soil temperature, spring green up, and summer turf quality indicate no significant differences among paint brands and the control or paint application rates.
