Leaching of Folicur®(Tebuconazole) and Mocap®(Ethoprophs) from Sand-Based Soil Incorporated with Activated Charcoal or Peat Moss.

Rapid infiltration and the low water holding of sand-based sports turf media favor the leaching of pesticides. This study simulated the leaching of Folicur® and Mocap® from columns containing four sand-based soil mixtures that were incorporated with activated charcoal or peat moss, i.e., Charcoal 1, Charcoal 2, Peat, and Control. The Charcoal 1 and Charcoal 2 columns contained the same amounts of activated charcoal but were packed differently. The total amount of leached Folicur was not significantly different between the soil column containing activated charcoal (Charcoal 2) and the soil column containing peat moss. However, significantly less Mocap® leached from the columns containing activated charcoal (Charcoal 1 and Charcoal 2) than from the column containing peat moss. This trend was more evident at a higher Mocap® application rate. Our results indicate that activated charcoal is potentially more efficient than peat moss in reducing the leaching of pesticides from sand-based soil and that the method used to incorporate the activated charcoal can affect its efficiency.
