Development of STS and CAPS Markers to Tag the Fusarium Head Blight Resistance on Chromosome 7E

Fusarium head blight resistance in wheat is a quantitative trait. QTLs identified in wheat germplasm provide partial resistance and QTLs with larger effect have not been commonly found in wheat gene pool. Resistance identified in wheat relatives has potential use in broaden the genetic basis of the FHB resistance. Wheat grass Lophopyrum elongatum and L. ponticum have been proved to confer FHB resistance on homoeologous group 7, and have been mapped in the telemetric region of the long arm. The genetic linkage map of L. ponticum suggested a syntenic relationship with wheat group 7. Based on the genetic map location of the QTL and deletion map of the flanking markers, the QTL could be in the deletion bin of homoeologous 7DL-0.82-1.00. Several wheat ESTs located in this bin were amplified and Lophopyrum specific markers were identified. The linkage relationship of these markers and FHB resistance was confirmed in a F2 segregation population.
