The Texas A&M Agronomy Society participates in many activities from fundraisers (merchandise sales, etc.) to community service with Angel Wishes and a community Garden project. But, one of our main focuses is on Outreach. We realize how uninformed society is about what agronomy really is and what it offers for society. We also recognize the decreasing numbers of students entering our field of study. Thus we have initiated two programs to increase the awareness of agronomy in Texas and elsewhere. The first is an “Outreach Program” to educate others about Agronomy. We developed a PowerPoint presentation that showcases what Agronomy encompasses, why it is important to society, career opportunities it offers, and to encourage future college students to consider going into the field of Agronomy. We take this presentation to high schools across the state and we speak to FFA students and 4-H chapters as well as other groups that we can make contact with. A second activity in which we participate is called Aggieland Saturday, a University sponsored Saturday in February where high school seniors come to the Texas A&M campus to tour the campus and to learn more about the disciplines and majors available to them. For our part in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, we set up a booth to showcase agronomy and the Soil and Crop Sciences Department in an attempt to educate and recruit future students. We believe that for the future of Agronomy and the soil and crop sciences to remain strong and vibrant we must recruit bright students to fill our shoes and to educate others as to how important and vital agronomy is to the every-day lives of citizens of the U.S. and the world.
