High-Intensity Soil Mapping for Hydropedology and Precision Agriculture Research.

Precision research requires precision soil mapping. In this study, we explore the need and protocol of high-intensity soil mapping for hydropedology and precision agriculture applications. We develop a hydropedologic procedure for zero-order (greater than 1:5,000) soil mapping using a combination of geophysical investigations, field soil coring, soil-landscape modeling, expert knowledge, and laboratory characterizations. We apply this procedure to map soils on a 19.2-ha agricultural landscape in central Pennsylvania, and link such high-intensity soil map to hydropedologic observations and monitoring data. The results provide an attractive means of utilizing existing Order II soil map and geospatial data layers in generating more detailed soil map for site-specific research and applications.
