Surround WP has been proven to offer a significant reduction in sunburn, sunscald, and heat stress in many crops. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of Surround on sunburn protection and yield in pineapple (Ananas comosus). The experiment was conducted using “on farm research” techniques in Parrita, Central Pacific zone of Costa Rica. The experiment was started in January 2004. Rainfall was considered nil during the time of the experiment. All plants were overhead irrigated twice a week using sprinklers. The following treatments were tested: Control (0 kg ha-1), Surround (64 kg ha-1), Surround (92 kg ha-1). Treatments were applied using the standard farm boom and nozzle spray. Rates tested were 64 kg and 92 kg in 2300 L ha-1, 2.8% and 4.0%, respectively of Surround WP (Engelhard Corp., 95% Inc. Kaolin). Three applications per treatment were made at 30 d intervals. Applications were started in approximately 100 d before harvest. A paired comparison t-test (P > 0.05) was conducted to compare each individual treatment, 8 replications of 100 experimental units each were utilized per treatment. Overall there was a shift from smaller size fruit to larger size fruit through the use of Surround. Surround applications at 64 and 92 kg ha-1 rates with increased production of caliper 4 and 5 fruits ranging from 9.46% up to 101.82%. Pineapple fruit waste was reduced 20.45% and 48.91% by the 64 and 92 kg ha-1 Surround application treatments, respectively, as compared to the control. Surround applications increased pineapple fruit size and reduced fruit waste, in an apparent rate response relationship. No sun burning damage was observed after Surround applications. Surround usage under these conditions resulted in substantial increases in pineapple potential profit. More research is needed to better understand Surround's beneficial effect on pineapple yield and quality.
