Adsorption of Heavy Metals in Sediment of the Paldang Reservoir, Korea.

Objective of this research was to investigate the adsorption of the heavy metals in the sediments of the Paldang Reservoir, Korea. The pH and EC of the sediments were ranged from 5.19 to 6.02 and 5.5 to 17.7 dS/m, respectively. The organic matter content was 25.3~58.6 g/kg. Total concentrations of heavy metals in sediments were in the ranges of 0.92~1.4, 16.4~29.8, and 86.0~128 mg/kg for Cd, Cu and Pb, respectively. The maximum adsorption quantities of Pb, Cu and Cd were 0.351~0.664, 187~0.469 and 0.123~0.321 mg/g, respectively. Distribution coefficients (Kd) of the metals in sediments were in the ranges of 0.111~0.183, 0.078~0.164, and 0.152~0.272 for Cu, Cd and Pb, respectively. The rate constants of the metal adsorptions in sediments were in the ranges of 0.007~0.017, 0.007~0.019 and 0.008~0.014 sec-1 for Cu, Cd and Pb, respectively. These adsorption parameters might be useful for the water quality modeling.
