Soil Phosphorus Phases and Release from Soil as Affected by Long-Term Manure Management.

The objective of this study was to determine if Mehlich extractable P (M3P) is a good predictor of water soluble P (WSP), degree of P saturation (DSP), and P release (Pr), for soils with a long-term history of manure application in the highly weathered soils of Virginia. Nine soils were selected from various sites within the Frederick soil series in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. All soils were assumed to have similar mineralogical composition, and a long-term manure history of broiler litter, layer litter, milk cow manure or commercial fertilizer. The soil analyses performed included a batch desorption with a 0.01 M NaCl background solution over a period of 3 days (Pr), Mehlich-3P (mg kg–1), WSP (mg kg–1), and DSP (%) as determined by ammonium oxalate extraction. Water soluble calcium (WSCa), aluminum (WSAl), and iron (WSFe) was also determined for the water extract (mg kg-1), and calcium release rate (Car) was determined for the batch desorption. All assays except WSP were evaluated only using an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analyzer, WSP was also determined colormetrically. M3P, WSP, and DSP were all well correlated.
