Experiments on Incorporating Inheritance in Soil Landscape Models.

Jay S. Noller, Oregon State University, Dept. of Crop & Soil Science, ALS 3017, Corvallis, OR 97331

Soil survey maps contain spatially continuous information related to the evolution of the subject landscape, what is here called inheritance. Much of this information is not predesigned into the map unit data structure. Inheritance emerges in soil survey map databases for many reasons. One these is that the soil-landscape model used by the soil surveyors incorporates geological and/or geomorphological interpretations. Experiments were conducted on soil landscapes where Quaternary geologic maps and soil survey maps overlap. Analyses involved aspects of data mining and geospatial analysis. Results of these experiments, as well as provisional development of tools to relate these data sets, will be presented.
