Current Status of Mas for Disease Resistance in Common Bean.

Diseases limit common bean production and quality worldwide. Genetic resistance provides effective and economical control of most diseases. Breeding for improved disease resistance has advanced through the use of marker assisted selection (MAS). Markers linked with major genes and QTL conditioning resistance to angular leaf spot, anthracnose, bean common mosaic virus, bean golden yellow mosaic virus, beet curly top virus, common bacterial blight, halo blight, root rots, rust, and white mold have been generated and applied in common bean breeding programs worldwide. We will review current research and breeding efforts in our lab and others which have lead to successful application of MAS in the development of germplasm lines and cultivars with enhanced resistance to the aforementioned diseases.
