Environmental Science Outreach Activities at Wesley College.

Bruce Allison, Wesley College, 146 Crescent Dr, Dover, DE 19904

An environmental science outreach initiative was launched in summer of 2005 at Wesley College. The rationale for developing this outreach program stemmed from a need to introduce middle and high school students to the interdisciplinary nature of the environmental sciences, to provide technical assistance to the Delaware DOE, and to assist teachers with new and challenging topics. In the summer portion of the outreach program, two 1-week sessions fully supported by a National Science Foundation/EPSCoR grant have been offered to high school students in 1) Environmental and Human Systems and 2) Detecting Environmental Change. The first session focused on learning field methods in the soil, plant and water sciences. The second session focused on learning field and laboratory methods in GIS/GPS. In both sessions, the impact of humans on the environment was emphasized. Technical assistance has been provided to the Delaware DOE, and teacher workshops have been offered in water quality and in watersheds and land use. This long-term outreach program is designed to develop new learning resources that have a real world perspective.
