Training Research Center Staff to Implement and Utilize New Technologies.

Jeff Boyer, Davis Purdue Ag Center, 6230 N. SR 1, Farmland, IN 47340 and Stephen Hawkins, Purdue Univ, 615 W. State St., West Lafayette, IN 47907-2053.

The development and availability of new electronic, computer and Global Positioning System technologies for equipment control and monitoring raises two challenges for research center operations.  One is acquisition concerns due to cost and the other is training farm staff to operate and utilize the equipment to its fullest capabilities.  The second point will be discussed on how to familiarize staff with newer electronic equipment, how to fit this equipment into routine operations to get the required research data, and how to develop feedback to researchers and the equipment manufacturers.  This also raises challenges with integrating existing machinery controls and data collection efforts in ongoing experiments into new equipment systems.
