Current nitrogen recommendations for wheat production in North Dakota were based on whole field application in an era of low nitrogen fertilizer costs. Because of the ability to manage within-field nitrogen application, and due to the higher cost of nitrogen fertilizer, a program is being pursued to review recent nitrogen response data and generate new data in spring wheat and durum. Results to date suggest that changes in nitrogen recommendation might be warranted. The research also examines methods to incorporate estimates of soil mineralization potential into nitrogen recommendations.
