Tissue Culture-Induced Epigenetic Variation.

Shawn Kaeppler, University of Wisconsin, Dep. of Agronomy, 1575 Linden Dr., Madison, WI 53706-1597

Plant tissue culture induces genomic stress resulting in somatically and meiotically heritable variation.  Epigenetic mechanisms underly some of this variation resulting in activation of transposable elements and induction of heritable epialleles.  I will discuss our recent results which support transposable element movement and epiallele formation as important mechanisms in tissue culture-induced variation in maize.
