Improving Kernel Size in an Elite Maize Inbred.

Michael Letchworth, Mycogen Seeds, PO Box 139, Sidney, IL 61877

An elite maize inbred currently used in commercial products is characterized by high oil concentration in the kernel and very good combining ability in hybrid combinations. It produces small kernel sizes when used as a female parent in seed production and as a result does not meet the requirements of Seed Operations. A program was developed to improve kernel size utilizing an accelerated backcrossing program, marker analyses, and kernel measurements at each generation. Results indicate 3 inbreds were identified with improved kernel size, equal oil concentration, and comparable agronomic performance.
