A field experiment was conducted at the Crop Research Centre, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar during summer 2002 to study the effect of different herbicides on weed control in soybean. The experiment consisted of ten treatments viz., Alachlor @ 2.0 g ai/ha as pre-emergence spray, two hand-weeding at 30 and 45 days, Quizafop-ethyl @ 50.0 g ai/ha as post-emergence, Chlorimurone-ethyl @ 9.0 g ai/ha post-emergence spray, Clomazone @ 1.0 kg ai/ha as pre-emergence spray, Pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg ai/ha as pre-emergence spray, Clomazone + Pendimethalin @ 0.375 + 0.750 kg ai/ha as pre-emergence spray, Imazethapyz + Imazamox @ 100.0 g ai/ha as post-emergecne spray. Clomazone @ 1.0 kg ai/ ha as pre-emergence spray + hand weeding at 30 days. The major weed species in weedy plots were Celocia argentea, Cyperus rotundus, Echinochloa colona and Oldenlandia diffusa. Celosia argentea was dominant weed at all stages. At 45 days, two hand-weedings resulted in 75.9% reduction in weed dry matter and 192.5 per cent increase in grain yield over weedy check, which was highest among all the treatments. Among herbicides, pre-emergence application of Clomazone + Pendimethalin @ 0.375 g ai/ha + 0.750 kg ai/ha, resulted in 48.6% reduction in weed dry matter and yielded 100.5 per cent higher than weedy check. At 60 days, Clomazone @ 1.0 kg ai/ha + hand-weeding at 30 days recorded 87.0% reduction in weed dry matter and 79 per cent increase in grain yield over weedy check, followed by two hand-weeding at 30 and 45 days resulted in 85 per cent reduction in weed dry matter. At 60 days, among herbicides post-emergence application of Imazethapyr + Imazamox @ 100.0 g ai/ha resulted in 69.7 per cent reduction in weed dry matter and 88.7 per cent increase in grain yield over weedy check.
