Cover Your Acres Winter Conference.

Brian Olson and Jeanne Falk. Kansas State University, Northwest Kansas Research and Extension Center, PO Box 786, Colby, KS 67701

In the summer of 2003, a need for a conference providing a comprehensive discussion of conservation crop production practices for the High Plains was identified. The conference is a joint educational venture by Kansas State Research and Extension and the Northwest Kansas Crop Residue Alliance, a farmer driven group. The conference was developed as a one-day meeting that had university, government, and farmer presentations with a trade show to exhibit the latest farming technology. The cooperation from private industry is a key component as they provide funds to allow for a mass marketing strategy to make farmers aware of the meeting. Over the past four years, several changes have been implemented to enhance the educational opportunities and appeal of the conference. Some of these changes include adding industry presentations, a second day that has the same program so as to allow more farmers to attend, and improved coordination of traffic flow between presentations and lunch. Attendance the first year was at 270 and has grown to 580 in 2007. When the conference is over, all attendees are sent a survey that allows them to evaluate the conference, individual presentations, ask them for ways the conference can be improved, and asks what topics they would like to see next year.
