Fall Harvesting of Alfalfa has Economic Advantage in North Dakota.

Dwain Meyer and Robert Nudell. Bolley Drive, North Dakota State University, North Dakota State University, Plant Sciences Dept., Fargo, ND 58105-5051

Produces are very hesitant to take a fall harvest fearing possible winter injury/winter kill. We compared fall harvesting when the plant was ready to no fall harvest in three experiments and managed three alfalfa variety trials over 7 years with the fall harvest. Winter kill has not occurred, but winter injury occurred one of seven years. Forage yield advantage was 5.7, 8.4, and 2.64 Mg/ha in 2, 3, and 1 year experiments. Forage yields for 2007 will be added. Forage quality was determined in 2006, which will be discussed.
