The effects of environment and variety on the isoflavone and anthocyanin of soybean were studied. The amount of isoflavones and anthocyanins were measured in 7 Korean soybean varieties by using HPLC analysis. Variation in total isoflavone ranged from 987 to 2,211ug/g. Isoflavone amounts of soybeans grown in different locations ranged from 987 to 1,786ug/g. The genotype, location, and genotype × location interaction were significant for isoflavone contents. Seoritae, black soybean with green cotyledon, had a higher concentration of isoflavone compared with other black soybeans. Anthocyanin content of seed coat ranged from 3.4 to 20.4mg/g. The genotype, location, and genotype × location interaction were significant for anthocyanin contents. Semoktae had a higher concentration of anthocyanin on a weight basis compared with other soybeans. Seed isoflavone and anthocyanin contents in 600m altitude were higher than other locations. This result indicates that highland area has more favorable environment for high quality soybean production.
