Second Time Is a Charm: Does Correcting Missed Exam Questions Enhance Student Learning?.

V. Steven Green and Christiane Schroeter. College of Agriculture, Arkansas State Univ., PO Box 1080, State University, AR 72467

The mission of the university is to guide students in learning specific fundamental principles so they can be life-long learners. Exams are often given as a means of assessing a students understanding of specific material. Can exams be used as a tool in helping a studnet learn the specific material?. We conducted a study to determine whether correcting missed exam questions assists a student in better understanding the required material. Students' perceptions on having the opportunity to correct missed exam questions were positive. However, more students took the time to correct missed exam questions when they were rewarded with additional points for doing so as opposed to those who were not rewarded. In addition to exams being a useful assessment tool, they can also be useful as a learning tool.
