In the west part of Heilongjiang Province, water shortage is a main problem for development. Irrigational system has been built in the low land area of Songnen Plain. The water source is introduced from Songnen River and it's quality fine. Long-term monitoring of soil salt-alkali and water dynamics showed that pH values, salt and soda concentration in soils and grandwater vary widely in the northern section of the system where salt contents have been decreased. Current irrigation practices have caused salinization increased in the Shafen section mainly due to the present ineffective drainage system. The end opening of the system is not working properly.
