Although differences in shades of purple were reported in Japan more than 80 years ago, those types have been lost and those descriptions have not been used in modern descriptions of soybean flowers. Purple, white, dilute purple, near white, magenta and pink are the currently recognized and genetically defined soybean flower colors. We identified three additional flower colors types in the in the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection: blue, light purple and dark purple. Near-isogenic lines were developed for each type in Harosoy 63. Inheritance, allelism and genetic mapping studies were completed for each flower color.
