Harvest Date and Seeding Rate Effects on Winter Black Oat and Lupin Mixtures.

Steven Noffsinger and Edzard van Santen. Agronomy & Soils Dept., Auburn University, 202 Funchess Hall, Auburn, AL 36849-5412

Our objective is to determine which harvest times and seeding rates provide the best forage quality and biomass yield for winter black oats and white lupin. Six treatments included four seeding rates with the mixture, and one each of either only black oats or only white lupin at the highest seeding rate. Harvest dates were 500, 1000, 1250, 1500, 2000 GDD at sowing, and there was a final harvest for grain yield. Weed pressure (or lack thereof), seed rate effects, and harvest time effects will be discussed for two years of data completed in central Alabama. Implications for management will also be discussed.
