At the NRCS seed farm in Bridger, MT, the recent death of a 5 year old stand of slender white prairieclover (SWPC), Dalea candida was attributed to two arthropod species, a cerambycid, Megacyllene angulifera (Blodgett et al. 2005) and a Lepidoptera: Cosmopterigidae: Gelechioidea: Walshia spp. (preliminary identification, P. Opler, USFS, Ft. Collins, CO; personal communication). Both of these species had tunneled in the taproot of this perennial crop with M. angulifera infesting approximately 10% of the plants and Walshia spp infesting 100%. More information about pest life cycles and management will be developed during the 2005 growing season. A study to determine native insect pollinator diversity and their impact on seed production will be conducted during the 2005 growing season.
