Due to increasing concerns over the environmental fate of nutrients applied to turfgrass areas, the Florida Green Industries Best Management Practices (BMP) Educational Program was initiated in 2003. The program was developed for the commercial lawn and landscape industry to increase awareness regarding nutrient leaching and runoff. The program is funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and is delivered by the University of Florida Extension Service. Beginning in 2007, the educational program is required in some cities in Florida. To date, approximately 3100 people have gone through the training. Post-test scores averaged 15, 17, and 13% higher than pre-test scores for for 2004, 2005, and 2006, respectively. Increase in knowledge was reported by 98%, 99%, and 88% of attendees in 2003, 2004, and 2005 respectively. All except for one attendee reported that they would implement the BMP material in their businesses. Follow-up surveys were sent out to attendees from 2005 to assess practices changed. 73% of respondents indicated that the information was relevant and helpful, but few actually changed fertilizer practices. 88% of respondents felt that the BMPs would help their business create a positive image.
