ABSTRACT Wisconsin is a pioneer state in conducting a survey of the elemental composition of its soils on a landscape scale. This study reports the indigenous concentrations of approximately 40 major and trace elements in 278 soil samples. Most of the samples are from the USDA-NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) soil collection. The general properties of these soil pedons are available at URL: http://ssldata.nrcs.usda.gov/querypage.asp. Most sites have descriptive data and mineralogical assessments accompanying the standard NRCS characterization information. Locations selected for this study cover most of the state's soil associations. The soil characterizations emphasize specific landscapes and thus are more representative of Wisconsin soils than random samples or geostatistically assigned grid samples. The soil geochemical compositions are an important part of the soil characterizations, complementing the descriptive information provided by the NRCS soil scientists. The results are used to study the classification and pedogenic relationships of soils and to provide survey information on the composition of soils.
