The Military Land Use and Management Division has a long and distinguished history as a part of the American Society of Agronomy. As Sub-Division XIV-a: in the early 1960s through to its current Division status it has served as an important venue for land use managers to showcase the science necessary to manage thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands of acres. Tending toward a focus on military lands in the late 1970's through 1990's presentations were made by a virtual Who's Who of military land managers on such topics as crabgrass control, aerial fertilizer applications, bioengineering, integrated pest management and carrying capacity. Presenters included the Defense policy makers and military installation land managers with their boots on the ground. They included scientists from Defense laboratories, National Laboratories, and many academic institutions working to manage large tracks of Federally-owned land. This paper will provide a history of the Division, its highlights and events, and a view of its place in the next 100 years of the Society.
