Soils from the ancient Maya site of Ramonal were physically and chemically characterized. Soil types were identified and ranked according to their current agricultural potential. Stable carbon isotope analysis was conducted on the organic matter of the soil samples to search for evidence of ancient maize agriculture. The isotope data was compared with the current soil conditions to better understand ancient land use and how the agricultural landscape has changed over time.
