The Organic Seed Partnership: Breeding for and in Organically Managed Systems.

The Organic Seed Partnership, Alcorn State U., Cornell U., New Mexico State U., NOFA-NY, Oregon State U., PGRU, USDA-ARS, UC Davis, W. VA State U., c/o Molly Jahn, 313 Bradfield Hall, Dept. of Plant Breeding & Genetics, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853

The organic seed partnership is a project funded by the USDA OREI program with the goal of expanding and improving vegetable varieties bred for and in organic systems. The partnership consists of farmers, public and private germplasm providers, breeders, nonprofit organizations and seed companies. Vegetable breeding populations, lines and varieties are collected from various sources and distributed to interested farmer/breeder/seed companies for further breeding, selection and evaluation in organically managed trial sites in a wide array of environments representing most major production regions in the US. Streamlined procedures are available if desired to manage the transfer of intellectual property. Outreach activities aim to support improved organic seed production in vegetables, the use of a wider array of vegetable types and varieties, and new curricula related to organic agriculture. Project partners include many farmers in a number of regions who are involved in participatory breeding and trialing cooperation and partners who are managing research, outreach and cooperative arrangements including Raoul Adamchak, George Bates, Jason Cavatorta, Ravi Chintha, Elizabeth Dyck, Michael Glos, Connie Falk, Teri Ferrin, Mark Hutton, Sarah Johnston, Mary Kreitinger, Barb Liedl, Carol Miles, Jim Myers, George Moriarty, Umesh Reddy, Larry Robertson, Erin Silva and Mark Van Horn.
